The right medication regimen can help you obtain freedom from anxiety and depression and empower you to achieve lasting positive change.

At Mount North, we specialize in evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and related conditions, such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder, specific phobias, and work or school-related stress. We also offer support for parenting challenges, life transitions, and mild to moderate mood concerns when they overlap with anxiety.

However, Mount North is not equipped to provide care for clients experiencing mental health emergencies, including active thoughts of harm to themselves or others. We also do not treat conditions such as substance use disorders, eating disorders, or psychosis, as these often require more intensive or specialized care than our outpatient model can provide.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, we recommend reaching out to a local crisis hotline, emergency services, or a treatment center that specializes in these areas. Our goal is to ensure every client receives the appropriate care for their individual needs.

Here are a few helpful tips to make starting medication for anxiety as easy and stress-free as possible:

Schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider who specializes in mental health to discuss your symptoms and concerns.
Be honest and open. Share your full medical history, including any other medications or supplements you’re taking, to ensure a safe and effective treatment plan.
Understand your options. Ask about the different types of medications available, their benefits, potential side effects, and how they might fit with your lifestyle.
Start slow. Medications are often prescribed at a low dose to begin with and are gradually increased as needed.
Monitor your progress. Track any changes in your symptoms, both positive and negative, and communicate these to your provider.
Be patient. Finding the right medication and dosage may take time, so give yourself grace and stay committed to the process.
Stay informed. Learn about your medication, how it works, and what to expect to help you feel more in control of your treatment.
Combine with therapy. Medication is often most effective when paired with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
Prioritize self-care. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep to support your overall well-being.

Medication can be an important part of treating anxiety disorders by helping to balance neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine, which can improve mood and reduce anxiety. By alleviating anxiety symptoms, medication can make it easier to perform daily activities and enhance overall quality of life. Additionally, medication can make it easier to engage in and benefit from therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), by reducing the intensity of symptoms.

When it comes to treating ADHD, the most commonly prescribed medications fall into two categories: stimulants and non-stimulants. Stimulants such as methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) and amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse) are typically the first line of treatment because they help improve attention and reduce impulsivity and hyperactivity.

Recognizing the signs of ADHD is essential for seeking appropriate treatment. Common indicators include difficulty sustaining attention, frequent careless mistakes, trouble organizing tasks, and a tendency to avoid activities requiring sustained mental effort. Hyperactivity symptoms may include constant fidgeting, an inability to stay seated, excessive talking, and running or climbing inappropriately. Impulsivity is often shown in behaviors like interrupting others, blurting out answers, and struggling to wait one’s turn.

If these symptoms sound familiar, seeking treatment can make a significant difference. Medication can help improve focus, organizational skills, and reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity, leading to better performance at school or work and more positive interactions with others. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, Mount North is available to provide a thorough evaluation and discuss potential treatment options.
