School-based Services and Training

Implementation of culturally inclusive mental health and behavioral support programs that improve care, strengthen outcomes, address trauma, and maintain students in their home district.

Three-Tiered, Holistic Approach.

When one student is struggling, the entire school is impacted. To contribute to the long-term well-being of our schools and communities, Mount North offers three tiers of mental health services for students including universal mental health for all students, selective services for students at-risk of mental health concerns, and indicated for those students who are already exhibiting problem behaviors and emotions. To achieve this, Mount North partners with students, families, school personnel, and outside service providers (Doctors, Hospitals, Case Managers, Juvenile Justice, etc.) to move each student forward.

Customizable Approach

Our customizable school-based programs are built into the school’s current systems and policies. Since Mount North is a small but well-experienced practice there is considerably less red tape to navigate, and services can be easily customized. We focus on the services provided instead of adding to administrative burdens. This also allows us to embrace the school’s existing climate and culture while improving outcomes for the whole school through intentional focus on school-wide mental health.

Proven Outcomes.

Proven Outcomes.

Through evidenced-based practices, Mount North has proven that we fulfill our commitment to successful partnerships for healthier schools. Mount North is in its second year partnering with another local district. Preliminary data has demonstrated that this partnership continues to be fruitful by several data points:

  • Zero suicides

  • Prevented all new out-of-school placements

  • Eliminated in-school and out-of-school suspensions for Mount North engaged students

  • Reduced disciplinary referrals

  • Reduced absenteeism

  • Improved grades

  • Increased assignment completion by cyber-students

Service Options.

In-school counseling sessions have been shown to increase student engagement in mental health treatment while improving coordination between guardians, teachers, and administrators. Though, Mount North offers more than just counseling sessions:

STUDENTS

  • Screening, assessment, and evaluations
  • In-school individual therapy
  • Telehealth sessions
    • Ideal for cyber students or those with barriers to attendance

Teachers, Administrators, and Staff.

Teachers, Administrators, and Staff.

Educator wellness is at an all-time low and teaching is now ranked the most stressful career tied with nurses and surgeons. Teacher-wellness programs focusing on mental health have been proven to reduce teacher call offs, improve student outcomes, decrease harsh punishments, and improve retention rates.

  • Weekly consultation groups

  • Professional Development Trainings

    • Exceed state minimum standards and are customized to teacher, administrator, and staff needs
  • In-class support (when requested)

  • Assessment and evaluation of teacher needs

  • Weekly wellness-focused resources shared via email

  • Education on identifying at-risk students and in-class behavior management strategies

  • Referrals to outside supports for teachers and their family’s health and wellness.

Funding

Mount North Counseling and Consultation is a non-profit entity and depending on each school’s individual needs, our costs are remarkably affordable. We can accept, help obtain, and provide reporting for grants (Safe Schools, ESSER, GEER, and more!). Also reducing the need for contract professionals to provide mental health screenings and assessments, absenteeism, out-of-school placements, teacher call offs, and improved employee retention, other districts have demonstrated substantial cost savings. While billing commercial insurance is an option, currently some counties have systemic barriers for Mount North and similar practices to bill Medical Assistance for in-school counseling services. Through advocacy and fundraising efforts Mount North is working towards developing internal resources for stable long-term funding. This is significant because no grants are guaranteed to continue forever.

All services are evidenced-based and exceed Trauma Awareness standards set by HEAL PA and the Commonwealth’s Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
